The Commission conducted only 44 conciliation cases when it was established in 1981, but the number has increased by over 100 cases every year since 1989. Upon increase in the number of media subject to conciliation together with revision of related laws, the effectiveness of the Commission has gradually improved and the number of cases conducted steadily increased every year, reaching up to over 3,000 cases. Beginning with 2,205 conciliation requests in 2010, the Commission received over 3,000 cases per year for last 4 years in a row. In 2014, there were a total of 19,048 claims including 16,117 mass cases(The term “mass cases” refers to cases involving more than 1,000 applications per individual subject of claim). This is because a religious group known as ‘Guwonpa’ and related individuals filed mass claims regarding the Sewol Ferry accident. The mass claims amounted for 16,117 out of the total 19,048 cases in 2014, and 1,908 out of the total 5,227 cases in 2015. In 2016 a total of 3,170 cases were requested, which was a little less than previous two years. Nevertheless, the number of cases submitted is on the increase recording 4,085 cases in the year 2023.

Damage remedy rate-the ratio of damage relief through correction of or reply to a news report etc.-was only 39.0% in 1981, but the rate has maintained over 70% for the past several years. In 2023, the Commission conducted 4,085 conciliation cases, and the damage remedy rate was 74.1%. Since the foundation, the average rate of damage remedy was 74.6%.
